The Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway is witnessing renewed rehabilitation efforts, with work progressing on sections of the strategic highway, including the Abule-Egba–Ahmadiyya corridor.
A visit to the area by our correspondent showed ongoing road improvement works, with residents and motorists expressing relief over the intervention, which they said could improve movement and reduce the hardship previously experienced along the route.
The Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway serves as a major link between Lagos and Ogun states and carries significant daily traffic. Several sections of the road have suffered deterioration over the years, resulting in potholes, damaged carriageways and prolonged traffic delays.
In February 2026, the Lagos State Government announced a partial closure of sections of the expressway to allow the Federal Ministry of Works to rehabilitate failed portions. The intervention covered the U-Turn Bus Stop–Sango Tollgate stretch and affected both inbound and outbound traffic.
Further rehabilitation was also announced around the Super Bus Stop–Ilepo Bus Stop section, with the Lagos State Government saying the Federal Ministry of Works would undertake reconstruction works there.
Recall, in 2024 it was reported that motorists travelling through Ahmadiyya, Ijaiye, Meiran, Alakuko, Amje and the Old Tollgate corridor faced severe deterioration, potholes and lengthy travel times.
Earlier reports had similarly documented rehabilitation efforts and challenges along different portions of the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta corridor.
For residents and motorists who regularly use the route, the ongoing works are being viewed as a welcome development, particularly if sustained to completion.
The intervention has also renewed calls for the comprehensive reconstruction of the entire Lagos-Abeokuta corridor, extending from Lagos through Sango/Ifo to Abeokuta, to ensure smoother movement, improve road safety and support economic activities between Lagos and Ogun states.
