Kenya has clarified that its visa-free entry policy does not give foreigners an automatic right to work or run businesses in the country.

Its authorities say foreigners entering Kenya under the visa-free arrangement must still obtain the appropriate work permits and immigration approvals before engaging in employment or business activities.

The policy, introduced in 2024 and expanded in 2025, has helped boost tourism and attract investment, but officials say enforcement will now be tightened.

It warns foreigners found using tourist or investor status to operate businesses outside the conditions of their permits could face action from immigration authorities.

The clarification is aimed at ensuring that Kenya’s open-entry policy supports tourism and investment without undermining the country’s immigration and labour regulations.
