The Nigerian Army has announced a major redeployment of senior officers to key command, operational and staff positions as part of efforts to strengthen operational effectiveness and improve national security.
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, approved the postings on Wednesday, with the exercise focused on strengthening leadership and aligning the Army’s command structure with the country’s evolving security challenges.
A major change is the appointment of Major General IA Ajose as Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK). Ajose moves from the Army Headquarters Department of Army Operations to the theatre.
His predecessor, Major General AE Abubakar, has been redeployed from OPHK to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre (NAHFC), where he will serve as Dean, Faculty of Operational Research.
Other senior appointments include Major General AM Alechenu, who moves from the Defence Headquarters Garrison to NAHFC, while Major General RT Utsaha moves from the Army Headquarters Department of Army Standards and Evaluation to become Commander, Defence Headquarters Garrison.
Major General AM Umar has been appointed Commandant of the Army War College Nigeria, moving from the Army Headquarters Department of Civil-Military Affairs. He replaces Major General UM Alkali, who has been redeployed from the college to the Department of Civil-Military Affairs.
Major General GS Muhammed moves from the Office of the National Security Adviser to the Nigerian Army Finance Corporation as Director General, while Major General JE Osifo moves from NAFIC to the Military Pension Board as Chairman.
Also, Major General IE Ekpenyong has been redeployed to the Defence Headquarters Department of Defence Logistics as Director, Engineering Services.
At the operational level, Brigadier General AA Bello moves from the 6 Division Garrison/Sector 3 Joint Task Force South-South, Operation DELTA SAFE, to the Defence Headquarters Department of Defence Operations.
Brigadier General MS Adamu has been appointed Commander of the newly established 8 Brigade, following his redeployment from the Nigerian Army Women Command.
Brigadier General MS Sule moves from Special Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE to become Commander, 27 Brigade, while Brigadier General I Sule moves from the Directorate of Recruitment Management to become Commander, 6 Division Garrison.
Brigadier General E Azenda has also been appointed Commander, 2 Division Garrison, moving from the Land Forces Simulation Centre. He is replaced at the centre by Brigadier General AS Bugaje, who moves from 2 Division Garrison to serve as Director of Administration.
The COAS charged the newly appointed commanders and senior officers to justify the confidence placed in them through exemplary leadership, professionalism, operational innovation and commitment to duty.
Shaibu urged them to remain focused on the Nigerian Army’s constitutional responsibilities, particularly the defence of Nigeria’s sovereignty, protection of its territorial integrity and support for civil authorities in maintaining peace and security.
The Army said the redeployments were designed to sustain a dynamic leadership and force-employment framework capable of improving operational outcomes, strengthening joint and inter-agency coordination, and enhancing its response to contemporary and emerging security threats.
