The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has expressed its sympathy to those affected by the unfortunate building collapse at No. 42, Governors Road, Aboru, in the Alimosho area of Lagos State.
The incident, which occurred during the manual demolition of a two-storey building, has once again highlighted the dangers associated with carrying out demolition works without strict adherence to approved procedures, professional supervision and prescribed safety measures.
LASBCA therefore warned property owners, developers and other stakeholders against engaging in illegal or unauthorised demolition of structures, stressing that demolition activities must be properly planned and carried out in accordance with relevant building control regulations.
The Agency emphasised that demolition is a technical activity that requires the engagement of competent and registered professionals, appropriate safety measures and necessary approvals from the relevant authorities before work commences.
LASBCA noted that resorting to manual or indiscriminate demolition without adequate technical assessment and supervision can pose serious risks to workers, adjoining properties and members of the public.
The Agency urged property owners and developers intending to remove existing structures to obtain the required approvals and engage qualified professionals to ensure that demolition activities are undertaken safely and in conformity with Lagos State building regulations.
The General Manager of LASBCA, Bldr. Gbaye Omolola Florence, reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to enforcing building control regulations across the state and promoting safe, orderly and sustainable development.
She further called on stakeholders to prioritise safety and building conformity, noting that compliance with established procedures remains essential to preventing avoidable incidents arising from construction and demolition activities.
