The Federal Government has officially launched the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, a new initiative designed to make it easier to identify locations across Nigeria and improve access to services, businesses and opportunities.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, announced the launch in a post on X on Thursday, urging Nigerians to search for their digital postcodes and begin using them for their addresses.

The system, which is operated by the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), assigns a unique 11-character digital postcode to every addressable building in Nigeria.

According to the minister, the digital postcode is designed to provide a precise, Geographic Information System (GIS)-enabled reference for identifying specific locations across the country.

Tijani said the initiative would have practical benefits for individuals, businesses and government agencies, particularly in improving how people and places are located.

He explained that businesses would be able to reach customers beyond their immediate neighbourhoods, while families could provide accurate location details during emergencies.

Government agencies would also be able to use the system to locate communities and deliver essential public services more efficiently.

“Every Nigerian deserves to be found. Every business deserves the chance to reach its customers. And every community deserves to be within reach of opportunity,” Tijani said.

The minister linked the digital postcode system to the Federal Government’s broader economic development plans, saying reliable location data is part of the infrastructure required to support President Bola Tinubu’s ambition of building a $1 trillion economy.

“As we work towards [President Bola Tinubu’s] ambition for a $1 trillion economy, we must build the foundations that allow more Nigerians to participate, trade and prosper. This is one of those foundations,” he said.

The digital postcode system identifies locations through five levels: state, local government area, district, area and building.

At the final level, each addressable building is assigned its own unique 11-character code, allowing locations to be identified more precisely than through conventional address descriptions alone.

Tijani encouraged Nigerians to visit the official Digital Postcode platform at postcode.gov.ng to search for their individual postcodes.

He also urged citizens to share their codes with family members, friends and businesses so that the system can be adopted more widely.

NIPOST had earlier explained that the digital postcode system is expected to support several areas of the economy and public service, including deliveries, emergency response, public service delivery and e-commerce.

The Federal Government expects the system to provide a standardised digital reference for locations and help improve how people, businesses and public institutions connect with one another across the country.
