The Oyo State Government has announced December 29, 2026, as the date for elections into the chairmanship and councillorship positions across the state’s 33 local government areas.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, disclosed this in a statement following the State Executive Council’s approval of counterpart funding for the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) to commence preparations for the elections.
According to the statement, the state government and the local government councils will jointly finance the polls, with the councils contributing 60 per cent of the total cost and the state government providing the remaining 40 per cent.
The 33 local government councils are expected to contribute ₦2.5668 billion, while the state government will provide ₦1.7112 billion, bringing the total funding for the exercise to ₦4.278 billion.
The approved funding is expected to support OYSIEC’s preparations for the conduct of the elections across the state.
The polls will determine the chairpersons and councillors who will oversee local government administration and represent residents at the grassroots level.
Further details on the election timetable, including campaign schedules and other electoral arrangements, are expected from OYSIEC.
