Manchester United are reportedly facing fresh uncertainty over head coach Michael Carrick’s future following a difficult run of results, amid unverified claims linking Italian manager Maurizio Sarri with a possible move to Old Trafford.
The claims suggest that the club’s hierarchy is considering a managerial change because of concerns about performances and reported tensions within the dressing room.
However, the reported dismissal of Carrick and an alleged agreement with Sarri have not been independently confirmed by the sources reviewed.
The speculation comes after Manchester United suffered a 4-1 defeat to Como in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, intensifying scrutiny of Carrick’s leadership and the team’s tactical approach.
According to The Guardian and Reuters, United captain Bruno Fernandes questioned aspects of the team’s tactics following the defeat, while Carrick acknowledged the disappointing performance and accepted responsibility for the result.
Manchester United appointed Carrick as permanent head coach in May 2026 on a two-year contract after his successful interim spell, according to BBC Sport.
The club also confirmed that his coaching staff had committed to the club for a further two years. BBC Sport; Manchester United official website.
Sarri, known for his possession-oriented approach and tactical emphasis on passing, has previously managed Chelsea in the Premier League, leading the club to the UEFA Europa League title in 2019.
