An 18-year-old woman, Gabriela Rodríguez Tezoco, has died after falling from a moving amusement ride during the traditional festivities in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The accident occurred on the night of Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at the fairground in Cabo San Lucas, in the municipality of Los Cabos, Baja California Sur.
According to local media reports, Gabriela fell from a thrill ride known as El Péndulo, also referred to as the Loop Fighter, while it was in operation.
Videos circulating on social media reportedly show the young woman falling from the moving attraction after her safety restraint appeared to rise. However, authorities have yet to establish the precise cause of the accident.
Emergency personnel, including Mexican Red Cross responders, attended to the victim before she was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. She later died from her injuries, according to reports by local news outlets.
The municipal government of Los Cabos confirmed her death on Wednesday, October 21, expressing condolences to her family, friends and loved ones.
In response to the incident, authorities suspended the operation of the ride and secured the affected area pending further investigation. Safety checks were also ordered for other amusement attractions installed at the festival.
The Baja California Sur State Attorney General’s Office (PGJE) has opened an investigation to determine how the incident occurred and whether any mechanical fault, failure of the restraint system or other safety lapses contributed to the fatal fall.
Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez also expressed sympathy for the bereaved family, calling for community support during their period of grief.
The tragedy has raised renewed concerns about safety standards, equipment inspections and the enforcement of operating requirements at temporary amusement parks and public festivals.
Authorities have not yet announced a definitive cause of the accident, and the investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding Gabriela’s death and determine whether any individuals or organisations bear responsibility.
