Retired officers of the Nigeria Police Force have appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to sign the Police Pension Bill into law, lamenting what they described as a significant disparity between their pensions and those of retired military personnel.

The retirees said the bill, which they claim was passed by the National Assembly last year, seeks to remove police personnel from the Contributory Pension Scheme and establish a dedicated Police Pension Board.

Expressing concern over the disparity in retirement benefits, a retired Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), who retired in 2008, reportedly disclosed that his monthly pension was initially ₦50,090 before it was increased by ₦13,000 to ₦63,090 two months ago.

He contrasted this amount with the reported monthly pension of ₦800,000 received by a retired Army Colonel, a rank considered equivalent to that of a Deputy Commissioner of Police.

The retirees argued that the disparity was unjust, particularly given the official rank equivalence between the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian military.

They are calling for the harmonisation of police pensions with those of their military counterparts, alongside the establishment of a separate pension board to address the welfare concerns of retired police officers.

Describing their current pension arrangements as unfair, the retirees urged the Federal Government to take urgent action to improve their living conditions and ensure equitable retirement benefits.

They also appealed to media organisations to amplify their concerns and call on President Tinubu to assent to the bill.
