The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has rejected calls for the rescheduling of the 2027 general elections over the confirmed case of Ebola in Nigeria.
The party’s presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, said a single confirmed case of the disease was insufficient justification for postponing the elections, noting that the situation had not reached pandemic proportions.
In a statement, Adebayo expressed confidence in Nigeria’s capacity to contain the disease and manage the public health situation without disrupting the electoral timetable.
He also urged the media to maintain independence, impartiality and professionalism in reporting the forthcoming general elections.
According to him, the media has a critical role to play in strengthening democratic governance by providing accurate, balanced and credible information to the electorate.
Adebayo further encouraged media practitioners to familiarise themselves with the SDP’s manifesto to enable them to report the party’s policies and programmes accurately.
He urged journalists to adequately inform the public and encourage voters to engage political parties on their manifestos, particularly during election campaigns.
The SDP candidate stressed the importance of responsible journalism in promoting informed participation and ensuring that Nigerians can make decisions based on credible information ahead of the 2027 general elections.
