An unidentified footballer has died in a fatal road accident involving a Mercedes-Benz C300, a bus and an alleged hit-and-run trailer driver along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
The accident reportedly occurred on Monday, November 2, 2026, around the Magboro axis of the expressway in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area.
Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) and police officers confirmed the fatality to journalists at the scene, disclosing that the trailer driver allegedly involved in the crash fled after the incident.
According to an eyewitness, the deceased footballer and other members of his football academy were travelling in two vehicles to honour a football match when the accident occurred.
The eyewitness, who requested anonymity, said a trailer allegedly crossed from the opposite direction and rammed into the Mercedes-Benz, causing it to collide with a bus.
He said only one person died in the Mercedes-Benz, while the other occupants of the vehicle survived. He added that everyone travelling in the bus escaped unhurt.
“We were going for a match. We just saw a trailer cross from the other side and hit this Benz, then it hit the bus. Only one person died in the car while the rest of us survived.
“Everyone in the bus is fine, too. The trailer driver fled with his vehicle afterwards,” the eyewitness said.
The Mercedes-Benz, bearing registration number SMK-878KX, was badly damaged in the collision, while efforts were ongoing to evacuate its wreckage from the expressway.
The identity of the deceased footballer and the name of his academy had yet to be established as of the time of filing this report.
