Trump Imposes 14% New Tariffs on Imports, Targets Nigerian Exports |LAGOS EYE NEWS

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a sweeping trade policy overhaul, imposing a baseline 10% tariff on all imports while introducing country-specific reciprocal tariffs.

LAGOS EYE NEWS reports that under the new measures, Nigerian exports to the U.S. will now face a 14% tariff, a response to what the U.S. government claims is a 27% duty imposed by Nigeria on American goods.

According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), total trade between Nigeria and the U.S. from 2015 to 2024 amounted to N31.1 trillion. Imports accounted for N16.4 trillion, representing 8.7% of Nigeria’s global exports.

The policy shift was announced during a Rose Garden event labeled “Liberation Day,” where Trump described the move as a historic step toward “fair trade.” He emphasized that the new tariffs aim to revitalize American industries and dismantle foreign trade barriers.

“This is one of the most important days in American history,” Trump declared. “We will supercharge our domestic industrial base, pry open foreign markets, and break down foreign trade barriers.”

The tariffs, which take immediate effect, will impact over 50 countries, including key U.S. trade partners such as China, the European Union, India, and Japan. Several developing economies in Africa, Asia, and Latin America are also affected.

Nigeria, along with Ghana, Ethiopia, and Mauritius, is among the African nations impacted by the new tariff structure. While Nigeria is not among the highest tariff imposers, its inclusion highlights Washington’s broad approach to trade reforms, extending to nations that previously enjoyed preferential trade terms with the U.S.

The new policy is expected to reshape global trade dynamics, with potential implications for Nigeria’s export sector and its broader economic relationship with the United States.
