New York is set to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on Friday, with United States President Donald Trump expected to stay away from the main commemorative ceremony at Ground Zero.
Trump is scheduled to pay his respects at the Pentagon, another site targeted in the attacks, rather than attend the ceremony in lower Manhattan, where hijacked aircraft crashed into the World Trade Center, killing most of the 2,977 people who died in the attacks.
Vice President JD Vance and four living former presidents Republican George W. Bush and Democrats Joe Biden, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton — are expected to attend the Ground Zero commemoration.
The ceremony will be marked by solemn tributes rather than political speeches. Family members of the victims are expected to read the names of those killed, while bells will be rung to mark key moments during the attacks.
The anniversary has also been accompanied by political controversy over the attendance of New York City’s first Muslim mayor, amid criticism from sections of the American political right.
The September 11 attacks remain one of the defining moments in modern US history, reshaping American foreign policy, national security and the country’s approach to terrorism.
