Operatives of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, known as Amotekun Corps, have arrested 28 suspects for allegedly kidnapping over 70 foreign nationals in the state.
The victims, all Ghanaians, were reportedly lured to Ondo under the false pretense of securing travel arrangements to Australia. However, upon their arrival, they were held captive and extorted for sums ranging between $1,500 and $2,000.
The syndicate was uncovered at Oda Road, Akure South Local Government Area, following a tip-off from one of the victims who managed to escape after several months in captivity.
While parading the suspects at the Amotekun Corps headquarters in Alagbaka, Akure, the state capital, the Amotekun Commander, Adetunji Adeleye, disclosed that the gang had deceived the victims with promises of obtaining Australian visas.
Adeleye further stated that investigations are ongoing to uncover more details about the syndicate’s operations and to ensure justice for the victims. He reassured the public of the corps’ commitment to tackling crime and ensuring the safety of residents and visitors in Ondo State.
