President Chakwera Urges Protection of Tobacco Farmers’ Interests |LAGOS EYE NEWS
President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has emphasized the need to protect and promote the interests of tobacco farmers, acknowledging their critical contribution to Malawi’s economy.
The President made the remarks on Wednesday during the official opening of the 2024/2025 Tobacco Market Season at the Auction Holdings Ground in Kanengo, Lilongwe.
“Tobacco farmers play a central role in stabilising the Malawi Kwacha and generating the much-needed foreign exchange that drives our national development,” President Chakwera stated.
Minister of Agriculture, Sam Kawale, also praised farmers for producing high-quality tobacco, noting that both the ministry and buyers were impressed by this year’s crop. He expressed hope that the new market season would yield favourable prices for farmers who have delivered premium-grade tobacco.
Earlier in the ceremony, Tobacco Commission Chairperson Dr. Godfrey Chapola lauded President Chakwera for his dedication to ensuring farmers receive fair prices. He disclosed that tobacco production has increased to 170 million kilograms this season, compared to 133 million kilograms last year. He added that buyers have previously indicated readiness to purchase up to 200 million kilograms.
The tobacco industry remains a vital pillar of Malawi’s economy, and stakeholders are optimistic about a successful and profitable marketing season.
