Police Raids Coleman Cable Counterfeiters in Lagos, Ogun, Arraigns Suspects |LAGOS EYE NEWS
Acting on the directive of the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), a special task force of the Nigeria Police Raid Cable Counterfeiters in Lagos, Ogun; Suspects Arraignedlice Force (NPF) has carried out coordinated raids across Lagos and Ogun States, arresting suspects allegedly involved in the adulteration and counterfeiting of electrical cables.
The operations, which form part of ongoing efforts to sanitize markets and eliminate the sale of substandard electrical products, targeted illegal activities at 29 Idolowo Market and 4 Sagbemi Street on Lagos Island, as well as locations in Akute (Ogun State), Alaba, and Oshodi, among others.
The investigation, led by ASP Akin Akinwoola, culminated in the arraignment of the suspects over the weekend at the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court.
Three suspects from Lagos Island, unable to meet bail conditions, have been remanded in prison custody. Meanwhile, nine others, who were granted bail, returned from their homes to face trial.
The court has adjourned the case to May 12 and May 23, 2025, for continued hearing. The Lagos Island and Alaba markets remain under close surveillance by authorities.
Commending the police for their efforts, Mr. George Onafowokan, Managing Director of Coleman Wires and Cables Industries Limited, praised AIG Adegoke Fayoade and his team for their commitment to curbing cable counterfeiting. He warned that unchecked counterfeiting could severely damage the local wire and cable industry.
“Many of the arrested individuals, reportedly young Nigerians from a particular region, were using the Coleman brand to market substandard products,” Onafowokan stated. “This not only endangers consumers but also tarnishes our brand’s reputation.”
He further called on the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) to intensify its crackdown on counterfeit products and urged Nigerians to report suspicious activities to law enforcement in a bid to safeguard the economy and public safety.
The management of Coleman Wires and Cables also expressed appreciation to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, for his continued support in the fight against cable adulteration in Nigeria.
