The Federal Government has announced plans to relaunch the Renewed Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme (RH-NHGSFP) on May 29, 2025, as part of activities commemorating President Bola Tinubu’s second year in office.
In a statement released through Yusuf, Personal Assistant on Special Duties to the President said
the initiative, which falls under the supervision of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, aims to provide daily nutritious, locally sourced meals to 10 million public primary school pupils in classes Primary 1 to 3 across the country.
According to him, the key targets of the revitalized programme include:
- A 20% increase in school enrolment and a 15% boost in academic performance by the end of 2025.
- Reduction in child malnutrition, improved school retention rates, and a strengthened local agricultural economy.
- Empowerment of women, youth, cooks, and smallholder farmers through capacity building, job creation, and inclusive practices.
Speaking on the relaunch, the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, emphasized the government’s commitment to tackling hunger and poor school attendance.
“Our mission is to feed every public school pupil in Primary One to Three, nurturing their potential and building the nation’s future. This initiative is a major step toward fighting hunger, malnutrition, and low school enrolment across the country,” he stated.
The programme is supported by a ₦100 billion budgetary allocation for 2025. Key upgrades include the introduction of QR-coded supply chains, real-time tracking systems to enhance transparency, and a partnership with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) for effective registration and monitoring of beneficiaries.
Additionally, nutritionists and health professionals will be engaged to ensure food quality and monitor pupil wellbeing.
With a strong emphasis on local sourcing—especially through women-led cooperatives—the RH-NHGSFP is expected to contribute significantly to reducing rural poverty by 40% and aligns with President Tinubu’s broader agenda on human capital development and poverty alleviation.
