AFCON Triumph: Senegal President Declares Monday Public Holiday |LAGOS EYE NEWS

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has declared Monday a paid national public holiday as the West African nation celebrates a dramatic Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory, according to multiple news reports.

The announcement comes after the Teranga Lions clinched the 2025 AFCON title with a 1–0 win over Morocco in a tense final held in Rabat late Sunday night.

The holiday is intended to give citizens across the country the opportunity to take part in nationwide celebrations following scenes of jubilation in Dakar and other cities, where fans danced in the streets amid fireworks and music

According to state media and local broadcasters, the presidential proclamation was made shortly after Senegal sealed the title, with the government urging citizens to use the day to celebrate peacefully and unite behind the national team. Fireworks, street processions and spontaneous gatherings were reported across Dakar and other major cities as jubilant fans waved national flags and chanted victory songs.

In a statement carried by international news agencies, President Faye congratulated the players, technical crew and football federation, describing the victory as “a triumph of discipline, sacrifice and national unity.”

He added that the team would be officially received by the state, with honours and rewards to be announced.

Sports analysts quoted by the BBC and African sports networks said Senegal’s AFCON success reflects years of investment in youth development and tactical consistency, noting the team’s strong defensive organisation and mental resilience throughout the tournament.

The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF), in a separate statement reported by local newspapers, dedicated the win to the Senegalese people, particularly the youth, saying the trophy symbolises hope and excellence beyond football.

Regional leaders and football bodies across Africa have also sent congratulatory messages, according to reports from AFP and Al Jazeera, hailing Senegal’s performance as a boost for West African football.

The AFCON victory further cements Senegal’s status as one of Africa’s football powerhouses and adds another historic chapter to the country’s growing sporting legacy.
