One person has been killed in Osogbo, the capital of Nigeria’s Osun State, following an attack on motorcyclists by a group of suspected hoodlums, local sources say.
The incident happened on Sunday evening around the Orita Elelede area near Asoje Junction, a busy part of the town. Witnesses said the attackers targeted people riding motorcycles in the area.
The victim, identified as Kazeem Oyewole, was reportedly riding with another person when they were confronted and attacked.
LAGOS EYE NEWS reports that Oyewole was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second rider escaped with injuries, according to local residents.
Sources said that the group involved is believed to operate from the Asoje area and is allegedly loyal to a man identified as Olalekan, although this has not been independently verified.
Local reports say the deceased was a personal assistant to a chieftain of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Kazeem Oyewale, popularly known as Asiri Eniba. The reason for the attack remains unclear.
Security operatives were deployed to the area shortly after the incident. The body of the victim was later evacuated, while residents and shop owners reportedly fled amid fears of further violence.
Police patrols were subsequently stepped up in the area to prevent reprisals and restore calm. Authorities have not yet issued an official statement, but investigations are said to be ongoing.
