Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has dismissed speculation that he may defect from Nigeria’s main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying he remains comfortable in the party.
Engr. Makinde was speaking after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu, at a time when several PDP governors and senior party figures were defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Asked whether he was considering a move to the APC, the governor said he had no such intention, insisting that his loyalty to the PDP remained firm.
“I’m comfortable in the PDP,” he said.
However, Mr Makinde acknowledged that some national challenges require cooperation across party lines, stressing the need for bipartisan engagement in the country’s interest.
He said there are moments when governance demands collaboration beyond party divisions, adding that such situations should be guided by what is best for Nigeria as a whole.
The meeting with President Tinubu comes amid increasing political consultations and shifting alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Mr Makinde is one of the few governors elected on the platform of the PDP, which currently sits in opposition at the federal level.
