Commonwealth Law Ministers to Meet in Fiji for Rule of Law Talks|LAGOS EYE NEWS

Fiji is to host the Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting from 9 to 12 February 2026, bringing together senior legal figures from across the Commonwealth.

Around 150 delegates, including attorneys general, justice ministers and solicitors general from the organisation’s 56 member states, are expected to attend the four-day meeting at the Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort in Nadi.

Discussions will focus on the role of strong legal safeguards in everyday life, including democratic participation, access to fair work, and the right to live in safe and healthy communities.

Ministers are also expected to agree on practical steps to strengthen the rule of law, improve access to justice and reinforce legal institutions seen as vital to stable societies, fair economies and environmental protection.

The Commonwealth Secretary-General, Shirley Botchwey, said the rule of law remained essential to peace, stability and development but was under increasing pressure in many parts of the world.

She said that when the rule of law was weakened or applied unevenly, ordinary people were most affected.

“For the Commonwealth, the rule of law is a cornerstone of our Charter and our work,” she said, adding that it required “practical, thoughtful commitment and cooperation, not rhetoric”.

Ms Botchwey said the Fiji meeting would focus on strengthening the rule of law as the foundation of a “resilient future”, where democratic participation, dignity at work and protection for vulnerable communities were upheld.

She also thanked the Fijian government for hosting the meeting.

The talks will be chaired by Fiji’s Minister for Justice and Acting Attorney-General, Siromi Turaga, under the theme Anchoring Justice in a Changing Tide: Strengthening the Rule of Law for a Resilient Future.

Mr Turaga said Fiji hoped discussions would explore how Commonwealth countries could strengthen the rule of law by ensuring justice systems remained flexible, inclusive and responsive.

He said ministers would also consider the legal challenges and opportunities arising from climate change, digital transformation and regional cooperation, with a view to ensuring legal systems remained resilient in the long term.

Five side events will be held alongside the meeting, involving youth leaders, people with lived experience of the justice system and disability rights advocates, to ensure a broad range of perspectives inform ministerial discussions.

Outcomes from the meeting are expected to contribute to the agenda of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, due to take place in Antigua and Barbuda later this year.
