Nigeria Plans to Use Gas to Drive Africa’s Energy Growth |LAGOS EYE NEWS

Nigeria says it intends to harness its vast natural gas resources to support Africa’s industrial growth and improve energy access across the continent.

The Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), Bashir Bayo Ojulari, made the remarks at the opening of the Nigeria International Energy Summit (NIES) 2026 in Abuja.

Speaking at the event held at the Presidential Villa, Mr Ojulari said gas would play a central role in Nigeria’s economic strategy, describing it as a transition fuel capable of driving industrialisation while supporting cleaner energy goals.

He said Africa faces what he described as an “energy trilemma” balancing access, affordability and sustainability noting that more than 600 million people on the continent still lack access to electricity.

Despite being richly endowed with energy resources, he said, Africa continues to struggle to convert this potential into widespread development.

“Nigeria’s pathway to a prosperous future lies in our collective ability to leverage our resource abundance, especially as gas sits at the heart of our strategy. It is our bridge to a cleaner future, our engine for industrialization, and our foundation for export-led growth

Nigeria holds an estimated 37 billion barrels of crude oil and about 209 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, positioning the country to take a leading role in reshaping Africa’s energy future, according to the NNPC chief.

Mr Ojulari said Africa’s energy transition must be tailored to its realities, rather than adopting models used elsewhere, stressing the need for an approach that prioritises poverty reduction, industrial growth, agriculture and transportation.

He added that NNPC Ltd sees its role as extending beyond commercial operations, describing the company as a driver of economic stability and social development.

As part of efforts to expand access to gas, Mr Ojulari said NNPC Ltd has introduced a new Gas Masterplan and is advancing major infrastructure projects, including the Obiafu–Obrikom–Oben (OB3) pipeline, the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) gas pipeline and the expansion of the Escravos–Lagos Pipeline System.

He said the projects were designed to stimulate economic activity by improving gas supply to industries and households across the country.

The Nigeria International Energy Summit brings together policymakers, industry leaders and investors to discuss energy development and transition strategies.
