US to Deport at Least 79 Nigerians Convicted of Serious Crimes|LAGOS EYE NEWS

The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) says it plans to deport at least 79 Nigerian nationals convicted of serious crimes in the country.

In a statement released on Monday, the department said the individuals are listed among what it described as the “worst offenders” in its criminal records and are subject to removal under US immigration law.

The DHS list includes individuals identified as Boluwaji Akingunsoye, Ejike Asiegbunam, Emmanuel Mayegun Adeola, Bamidele Bolatiwa, Ifeanyi Nwaozomudoh, Aderemi Akefe, Solomon Wilfred, Chibundu Anuebunwa and Joshua Ineh, among others.

Others named are Usman Momoh, Oluwole Odunowo, Bolarinwa Salau, Oriyomi Aloba, Oludayo Adeagbo, Olaniyi Akintuyi, Talatu Dada, Olatunde Oladinni, Jelili Qudus and Abayomi Daramola.

The list also includes Olusegun Martins, Kingsley Ariegwe, Olugbenga Abass, Oyewole Balogun, Adeyinka Ademokunla, Christian Ogunghide, Christopher Ojuma, Olamide Adedipe and Patrick Onogwu, as well as several others.

US authorities did not provide details of the specific offences committed by the individuals but said they had all been convicted of crimes considered serious under federal law.

The move is part of a wider crackdown on illegal immigration and criminal activity being pursued by the administration of President Donald Trump. US officials say the policy prioritises the removal of non-citizens with criminal convictions.

Nigerians are among several foreign nationals affected by the enforcement measures, which have drawn both domestic and international attention.
