The Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has appointed Barrister Sunny Ewule as his new Chief of Staff, replacing Rt Hon Edison Ehie in a fresh cabinet reshuffle.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Thursday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Onwuka Nzeshi.
The statement also confirmed the appointment of Dr Dagogo S.A. Wokoma as the new Secretary to the State Government (SSG). Both appointments take immediate effect.
The new officials are expected to be sworn in at 14:00 local time at the Executive Council Chamber of the Government House in Port Harcourt.
Mr Ewule, a legal practitioner and associate of the governor, hails from Emohua Local Government Area. He was seen alongside Mr Fubara in 2023 during the presentation of the governor’s certificate of return by Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission, in Abuja.
Observers say the appointment may be part of efforts to consolidate the governor’s administration amid prolonged political tensions in the oil-rich state.
Mr Ehie, who previously served as a factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, was appointed Chief of Staff in January 2024. He had resigned his legislative seat during a period of intense political crisis involving the state assembly and the governor’s predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
He was widely regarded as a loyal ally of Mr Fubara and played a prominent role during the political standoff that reshaped the state’s power structure.
