India urges early end to hostilities after PM Modi speaks to Netanyahu |LAGOS EYE NEWS

India’s Prime Minister has called for an “early cessation of hostilities” in a telephone conversation with his Israeli counterpart, as tensions continue to escalate in the region.

In a statement released on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he had spoken with Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, to discuss the “current regional situation”.

Mr Modi said he conveyed India’s “concerns over recent developments” and emphasised that the safety of civilians must remain a priority.

“India reiterates the need for an early cessation of hostilities,” he said, without elaborating on the specific proposals discussed during the call.

The Israeli government has not yet released details of the conversation. However, Israeli officials have repeatedly maintained that their actions are aimed at safeguarding national security amid ongoing regional instability.

India has historically maintained diplomatic ties with both Israel and several Arab nations, often calling for dialogue and de-escalation during periods of heightened tension in West Asia, as the region is commonly referred to in India.

According to Reuters, India’s intervention comes as global powers intensify diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation. Several countries have expressed concern about the humanitarian impact of the fighting, particularly on civilians.

Al Jazeera reported that international calls for restraint have grown louder in recent days, with aid agencies warning of worsening conditions for vulnerable populations.

Meanwhile, The Times of India noted that New Delhi’s position reflects its broader foreign policy approach — balancing strategic relations with Israel while maintaining strong ties across the Middle East.

India has consistently advocated for dialogue and diplomatic solutions in regional conflicts, urging all parties to exercise restraint.
