The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has inaugurated a seven-member committee to coordinate the implementation of state police to be established in the various states of the Federation.
The IGP described the establishment of state police as a major step toward strengthening Nigeria’s internal security architecture and deepening community-based policing.
The IGP inaugurated the committee while addressing senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force. He said the task before them is both significant and timely as Nigeria faces evolving security challenges that require bold reforms and strategic collaboration.
Addressing senior officers, IGP Disu stated that leadership is about responsibility, not position, stressing that professionalism, accountability and respect for human rights must guide police conduct nationwide.
The committee is chaired by Professor Olu Ogunsakin, with CP Bode Ojajuni as Secretary. Members include CP Okebuchi Ogora, CP Suleiman Guma, CP Okechukwu Okagor, CSP Tolulope Ipimiso, and retired CP Emmanuel Ojukwu.
The Committee has been mandated to develop a workable framework for state policing without undermining national security, review policing models within and outside Nigeria, assess community security needs, and propose structures covering recruitment, training, funding, accountability and oversight.
