An appeal court in Greece has sentenced England and Manchester United defender Harry Maguire to 15 months in prison, suspended, over an incident that took place on the island of Mykonos in August 2020.
The ruling relates to charges including aggravated assault on a police officer, resistance to arrest and attempted corruption, following an altercation during the footballer’s holiday.
Maguire had initially been handed a 21-month suspended sentence in 2020. That verdict was later quashed on appeal, triggering a retrial which was delayed several times before the latest decision was delivered.
Under Greek law, a suspended sentence means he will not serve time in prison unless he commits another offence within a specified period.
According to reports in the Daily Mail, Maguire is expected to appeal against the ruling. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing and previously said he believed he was the victim of a miscarriage of justice.
