INEC Unveils 2027 Poll Schedule, Warns Against Procurement Compromises |LAGOS EYE NEWS

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election, marking a significant step toward strengthening Nigeria’s electoral system.

The Commission also announced a renewed focus on improving procurement processes as a key driver of credible elections.

The announcement was made during a three-day capacity-building workshop for National Electoral Commissioners and senior management staff held in Lagos, in collaboration with Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS).

Opening the workshop on behalf of the INEC Chairman, National Commissioner May Agbamuche-Mbu described the engagement as a critical moment in the Commission’s reform efforts, particularly amid ongoing legal and operational changes in Nigeria’s electoral system.

She conveyed the position of INEC Chairman Joash O. Amupitan, who emphasised that the Commission’s responsibility goes beyond conducting elections to safeguarding democratic processes through transparency, accountability, and resilience.

In his address, Amupitan described the workshop as a strategic intervention aimed at strengthening the Commission’s capacity ahead of the 2027 polls.

“Our mandate is to ensure that Nigeria’s electoral system is not only strong in theory but effective in practice,” he said, stressing the need to move from reform discussions to concrete implementation.

He highlighted procurement as a critical but often overlooked component of electoral integrity, noting that transparent and accountable procurement systems are essential to building public trust.

“When procurement is handled with integrity, it becomes the bedrock of public confidence. When compromised, it erodes trust,” he stated.

Amupitan also referenced the newly enacted Electoral Act 2026, describing it as a landmark reform that has reshaped INEC’s operational framework. He pointed to the reduction of the election notice period from 360 to 300 days as a major change requiring greater efficiency and precision.

According to the Commission, presidential and National Assembly elections will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2027, while governorship and state assembly elections are scheduled for Saturday, February 6, 2027.

The INEC Chairman explained that the early release of the timetable is intended to provide clarity for stakeholders, including political parties, security agencies, and voters, while allowing sufficient time for logistics, procurement, and training.

“By releasing this timetable early, we are reinforcing our commitment to transparency and preparedness,” he said.

Amupitan also commended KAS for its continued support, describing the partnership as vital to strengthening democratic institutions in Nigeria.

In his remarks, KAS Resident Representative Tobias Ruettershoff underscored the importance of procurement in ensuring credible elections, noting that it directly affects efficiency, fairness, and public trust.

“Procurement is not just administrative—it is central to democratic credibility,” he said, adding that transparent systems are essential for maintaining confidence in electoral outcomes.

Delivering the keynote address, Director-General of the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), Adebowale Adekunle described procurement as the “hidden engine of electoral integrity.”

He outlined reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda aimed at improving transparency, competition, and digital transformation in public procurement, revealing that over ₦1.1 trillion has been saved through enhanced price intelligence, alongside the certification of more than 2,700 procurement professionals.

Adekunle warned of key risks in electoral procurement, including over-reliance on single vendors and global supply chain disruptions, which could affect the timely delivery of election materials.

“A resilient democracy must never outsource its sovereignty,” he cautioned.

He recommended early planning, supplier diversification, and the adoption of e-procurement systems to mitigate these risks.

The workshop is expected to shape INEC’s preparations for the 2027 elections, with participants tasked to review existing systems and develop practical solutions to enhance procurement efficiency.

INEC reiterated its commitment to delivering credible, transparent, and verifiable elections, assuring Nigerians that preparations are already underway to meet the highest standards.

“The Nigerian people deserve nothing less than our best,” Amupitan said.
