2026 Fanti Carnival: Lagos Celebrates Afro-Brazilian Heritage in Grand Style |LAGOS EYE NEWS

Thousands of revellers stormed Lagos Island on Easter Monday as the 2026 Fanti Carnival delivered a spectacular showcase of colour, music, and cultural heritage at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos Island.

The annual festival, formally known as the Fanti Festival, commemorates the Aguda a community of Afro-Brazilian returnees who sailed back to West Africa from Brazil in the 19th century and settled in Lagos, enriching the city with their distinct cultural identity.

Performers clad in elaborate costumes featuring feathers, beads, and sequins dazzled spectators with coordinated processions, rhythmic music, and captivating dance displays throughout the day.

Historic Lagos communities including Campos, Lafiaji, Okoo-Faji, Okepopo, Olowogbowo, Epetedo, and Isale-Eko were all represented at the event, each group adding its distinctive flair to the celebration while underscoring the deep communal roots of the tradition.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who attended the event, described the carnival as a powerful testament to the city’s rich and layered heritage.

The governor commended the active involvement of young people in music, dance, and costume design, describing it as clear evidence of a growing interest in cultural preservation among the next generation of Lagosians.

“Cultural events like the Fanti Carnival play a vital role in strengthening identity and fostering unity,” Sanwo-Olu said, reaffirming the state government’s unwavering commitment to supporting cultural platforms that bring communities together.

Community leaders equally commended the high level of organisation recorded at this year’s carnival, with particular praise for the remarkable degree of youth participation.

Residents described the event as far more than a mere celebration, identifying it as a unifying platform that transcends community boundaries and reflects the rich diversity for which Lagos is widely known.

Security agencies also received commendations for maintaining order throughout the day. Officials confirmed smooth coordination between law enforcement and emergency responders, ensuring a peaceful and enjoyable atmosphere for all attendees.

The Fanti Carnival, held annually on Easter Monday, remains one of the most significant cultural events on Lagos Island’s calendar.
