U.S. Orders Abuja Embassy Staff Families to Leave Over Nigeria Insecurity |LAGOS EYE NEWS

The United States has ordered the voluntary departure of non-emergency government employees and their family members from the U.S. Embassy in Abuja following worsening security concerns in Nigeria.

In an updated travel advisory effective April 8, 2026, the U.S. Department of State said Americans should reconsider travel to Nigeria due to rising risks linked to crime, terrorism, kidnapping, and civil unrest, while maintaining the country at Level 3 advisory status.

The advisory also placed several Nigerian states under the stricter Level 4 “Do Not Travel” warning, citing heightened insecurity in affected areas.
