The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has uncovered a suspected baby factory in the Okuju area of Ilado, Badagry, Lagos State, rescuing 28 individuals during a coordinated operation.
Those rescued include 18 adults and 10 children. Among the adults are 17 pregnant women and one individual reported to have suffered a miscarriage. Authorities also arrested two suspects believed to be connected to the operation of the facility.
Lagos State Commandant of the NSCDC, Adedotun Keshinro, disclosed that the raid followed intelligence gathering that lasted about three weeks. He explained that operatives carried out an early morning operation on a residential building located within the Okuju-Ilado community.
According to Keshinro, the building consisted of several apartments allegedly used to accommodate pregnant women. He added that the suspects were said to have contacted the women through social media platforms, luring them with promises of financial rewards.
He further alleged that upon arrival at the facility, the women were made to sign agreements and their movement was restricted within the premises.
The NSCDC stated that both the rescued victims and the arrested suspects would be handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further investigation and appropriate action.
One of the suspects declined to comment, citing the need for legal counsel, while another insisted that the women joined the facility voluntarily and were not coerced.
A victim also confirmed that she entered the facility on her own, citing lack of support from the man responsible for her pregnancy.
Meanwhile, a community leader in the area said residents had noticed unusual movements around the property but were unaware of the alleged activities until the NSCDC conducted the raid.
