The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has responded to a viral video circulating on social media, in which a mother alleged the presence of inappropriate content in an English language textbook used by nursery pupils in a school.
In an official statement, the Ministry reassured parents, guardians, educators, and the public that swift action has been taken.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, has ordered an immediate investigation into the matter.
Preliminary findings by the Ministry reveal that the textbook in question is not among those approved or recommended by the Lagos State Government for use in public or accredited private primary schools. Authorities also confirmed that the school featured in the viral video is located within Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State.
The Ministry emphasized that the textbook is not part of the officially sanctioned instructional materials permitted in schools across the state. It further disclosed that both the school and the publisher involved have been identified and are currently under investigation, with appropriate actions to follow.
Reaffirming its commitment to quality education, the Ministry stated that it maintains strict guidelines for the selection and approval of educational materials to ensure they are age-appropriate, morally sound, and aligned with the state’s standards and values.
Also speaking on the development, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, reiterated that only government-approved textbooks and instructional materials are permitted in Lagos schools. She urged school administrators, proprietors, and teachers to strictly comply with these regulations to protect the moral and academic development of pupils.
