Musician and pastor Banky W has challenged conventional ideas about marriage, saying couples should establish their own domestic arrangements rather than follow rigid cultural norms.
In an interview on the Teju Baby Face Show, the Nigerian entertainer explained that his wife, acclaimed actress Adesua Etomi-Wellington, does not cook regularly at home a responsibility he handles himself.
The candid discussion comes after a video of him cooking breakfast went viral online, prompting wider commentary on traditional gender roles.
“My wife can cook very well, but it’s not her thing,” said Mr. W, who described the arrangement as mutually beneficial. “I enjoy cooking, I love eating, and she loves eating. So it works.”
While acknowledging that some viewers find the dynamic unconventional, Mr. W argued that personal happiness should take priority over public approval. “It might make some people uncomfortable, but what works for you will be different from somebody else,” he said.
The comments touch on broader questions about how modern couples negotiate domestic responsibilities in societies where traditional gender expectations remain influential.
Mr. W also framed his role in household duties within a larger context of marital partnership, referencing his wife’s courage during their lengthy struggle with infertility.
“I’ve seen her endure things that would break people” during multiple IVF treatments, he said, suggesting that household tasks represent a reciprocal expression of commitment, he concluded.
