IGP Warns Against Misuse of Police-Related Videos, Reaffirms Commitment to Accountability |LAGOS EYE NEWS

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has called for responsible recording and circulation of police-related videos and content, warning that the misuse of such materials could damage officers’ morale, mislead the public, and undermine security operations across the country.

Speaking during an interactive session with members of the Crime Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CCAN) in Abuja, the IGP reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to accountability, transparency, professionalism, and respect for human rights.

Disu cautioned against the dissemination of misleading, manipulated, or outdated police-related content, stressing that officers deserve public support as policing challenges continue to evolve alongside technological advancements.

While acknowledging the importance of public scrutiny, the IGP noted that such oversight must be balanced with the realities of policing, emphasizing that officers operate under difficult and high-risk conditions to ensure the safety of Nigerians.

According to a statement issued after the meeting, the IGP described the indiscriminate recording of officers and the circulation of distorted videos as harmful to public trust, national security, and community stability.

He further revealed that policing has become increasingly demanding, with officers working extended hours and making significant sacrifices in the line of duty. Disu disclosed that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command lost about 140 officers last year due to violent attacks, accidents, and other duty-related incidents.

Reiterating the Force’s zero-tolerance policy on misconduct, the IGP assured Nigerians that officers found guilty of wrongdoing would continue to face appropriate disciplinary measures.

At the same time, he stressed the need to protect officers carrying out lawful duties from harassment, misinformation, and unfair public attacks.

The police chief also pledged sustained engagement with the media, describing journalists as critical partners in the fight against insecurity. He urged media practitioners to continue promoting accurate, balanced, and responsible security reporting to support national peace and stability.
