The Ghanaian government has announced plans to purchase tickets for Ghanaians living abroad who wish to support the national football team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, rather than sponsoring large groups of fans to travel from Ghana.
President John Dramani Mahama said the initiative is designed to strengthen fan support for the Black Stars while reducing the financial burden associated with funding overseas travel for supporters.
Speaking on the plan, the president noted that the United States, Canada, and Mexico the host nations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup are home to sizable Ghanaian diaspora communities that can provide strong backing for the national team during the tournament.
Mahama explained that sponsoring a single supporter throughout the competition could cost nearly $11,000, making large-scale travel sponsorships impractical under current economic conditions.
Government officials said the ticket-purchase programme forms part of broader efforts to mobilise support for the Black Stars as they prepare to compete on football’s biggest stage.
The initiative is expected to boost attendance by Ghanaian supporters at World Cup matches while ensuring public resources are used more efficiently.
