The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed viral social media reports alleging that armed bandits have invaded communities such as Ibeju-Lekki, Imota, and Oke-Afo, targeting schools and children across the state.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Command described the widely circulated security alerts as false, misleading, and unfounded, stressing that there is no ongoing security threat or coordinated attack on any school or community in Lagos State.
The police urged residents to disregard the rumours, warning that the misinformation was capable of creating unnecessary panic and fear among members of the public. Authorities maintained that schools across the state remain safe, with adequate security measures and surveillance systems in place.
According to the Command, the spread of the false alert has already resulted in a tragic loss of life. A 24-year-old commercial motorcycle rider, identified as Kulaha Ayuba, was allegedly attacked and killed by a group of youths who mistakenly believed he was one of the purported bandits.
Police said the victim was falsely accused of being a “Fulani bandit” before he was assaulted. His body was later discovered in a swamp within the community, while his motorcycle was reportedly stolen by the attackers.
Following a swift police response, fifteen suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident. The Command stated that investigations are ongoing and assured residents that all individuals found responsible would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The police condemned the deliberate circulation of unverified information, noting that such actions fuel public disorder, ethnic profiling, and mob violence.
“Individuals found responsible for originating, publishing, or deliberately circulating false and inciting information capable of causing public alarm, disorder, ethnic tension, or violence will be investigated and prosecuted,” the statement said.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, appealed to residents to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding. He encouraged members of the public to report suspicious activities through official police and emergency channels rather than relying on unverified social media reports.
The Lagos State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, assuring Lagosians that security agencies remain fully deployed across the state to maintain peace and public safety.
