Malawi Launches Nationwide Fundraising Drive to Repatriate Citizens from South Africa |LAGOS EYE NEWS

The Malawi government has launched a nationwide fundraising campaign aimed at assisting up to 10,000 citizens stranded in South Africa amid growing xenophobic attacks.

In a statement, the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) said the scale of the crisis has stretched government resources, prompting an appeal to businesses, organisations, development partners, and members of the public for financial support.

According to the department, funds raised will be used to provide transportation, temporary shelter, and humanitarian assistance to Malawians seeking to return home safely.

Authorities described the initiative as both a humanitarian intervention and a national call for solidarity, stressing the need to support citizens affected by the escalating tensions in South Africa.

The first group of returnees arrived safely in Malawi last week, while additional groups are expected in the coming weeks as the evacuation exercise gains momentum.

Government officials reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the safe and dignified return of all affected citizens who choose to come back to Malawi.
