The Ondo State Government has ordered the withholding of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results and school testimonials of 17 students involved in a viral sign-out video that sparked widespread criticism on social media.
The students, drawn from Oyemekun Grammar School, Aquinas Secondary School, and CAC Grammar School, were identified in a video that circulated on platforms including TikTok and Facebook after the completion of the 2026 WASSCE examinations.
The footage reportedly showed graduating students engaging in acts considered unruly by authorities, including tearing school uniforms and chanting inappropriate slogans during sign-out celebrations.
The decision was reached during an emergency meeting convened by the Ondo State Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology in Akure, where government officials and school administrators reviewed the incident and discussed disciplinary measures.
Announcing the sanctions, the Ministry stated that the affected students’ WASSCE results and official school testimonials would be withheld until further notice. In addition, their names will be entered into a newly established “black book” for student misconduct in their respective schools.
The Ministry also directed all secondary schools in the state to create misconduct registers, popularly referred to as “black books,” to document cases of student indiscipline.
Senior officers and principals of the affected schools have been issued official queries for what the Ministry described as inadequate supervision, which allowed the celebrations to degenerate into disorder.
Furthermore, students featured in the video who are not in their terminal classes have been ordered to face immediate expulsion from their schools.
Speaking after the disciplinary hearing, the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, said the government would not tolerate actions capable of undermining discipline and the reputation of the state’s educational system.
“While celebrating academic achievements is normal, such celebrations must be conducted within acceptable limits. We will not allow social media trends to erode the discipline and values we have worked hard to instill in our schools,” he said.
Ajibefun added that the government remains committed to preserving the integrity of education in the state and ensuring that schools remain conducive for learning.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Akindele Ige, urged school administrators to promptly report potential incidents of unrest to relevant authorities to prevent situations from escalating.
The Commissioner also called on parents to counsel their children against actions that could negatively affect their future prospects, noting that the sanctions were intended to serve as a deterrent to other students.
Parents and the students involved have been summoned to the Ministry to receive official letters detailing the disciplinary measures imposed on them.
The Ministry maintained that the action reflects its zero-tolerance stance on student misconduct and its determination to uphold discipline across schools in Ondo State.
