Yellow Heat Health Alert Issued as England Records Hottest June |LAGOS EYE NEWS

A Yellow Heat Health Alert has been issued for large parts of the United Kingdom, with forecasters warning of another spell of high temperatures later this week.

The alert, issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), will be in effect from 12:00 p.m. on Saturday until 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. It covers the East Midlands, eastern, southeastern and southwestern regions of England, including London.

Health officials warned that the hot weather is likely to place additional pressure on health and social care services, particularly due to increased demand from vulnerable groups such as older adults and people with underlying health conditions.

The agency also cautioned that the risk to life for vulnerable individuals could rise during the period.

Authorities have further warned of an increased likelihood of water-related incidents, including cold water shock and drowning, urging the public to exercise caution around rivers, lakes and coastal areas.

The warning follows recent tragedies in which at least seven people lost their lives in water-related incidents during the latest heatwave, adding to 15 similar deaths recorded in May.

The latest alert comes just days after the UK experienced a record-breaking heatwave that prompted the Met Office to issue a rare Red Warning for Extreme Heat across parts of the country, alongside Red Heat Health Alerts from the UKHSA.

Meanwhile, the Met Office has confirmed that England has provisionally recorded its hottest June on record. Temperatures soared to 37.7°C in Lingwood, Norfolk, on Friday, surpassing the previous June record of 35.6°C set in 1976 by more than two degrees.

Monthly climate data also showed England’s average temperature reached 17.1°C in June, exceeding the previous record of 16.9°C set in 2025. Across the UK, the average temperature stood at 15.6°C, making it the second warmest June on record, behind only the 15.8°C average recorded in 2023.

Meteorologists say the latest figures underscore the growing trend of more frequent and intense heat events across the UK, with public health officials continuing to urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and regularly check on vulnerable family members and neighbours.
