The Nigerian military has recorded a major breakthrough in the ongoing counterterrorism campaign in the North-East, arresting a suspected ISIS-linked Arab fighter following a failed attack by ISWAP terrorists on Cross Kauwa in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.
The arrest came as troops of Operation HADIN KAI intensified follow-up operations after successfully repelling the attempted infiltration of the community by ISWAP fighters.
Security sources disclosed that exploitation operations carried out after the failed assault led to the recovery of several items abandoned by the fleeing terrorists, including High Frequency (HHR) communication radios believed to have been used during the attack.
In a separate operation around the Lake Chad Islands in Abadam Local Government Area, troops apprehended a fleeing Arab suspect believed to be a Moroccan national with links to the ISIS terrorist network.
According to military sources, the breakthrough followed detailed forensic analysis conducted with the support of international partners after troops recovered a camcorder from the battlefield.
The device was reportedly found on a terrorist cameraman who was killed during the Cross Kauwa operation.
Investigators said video recordings stored in the camcorder provided valuable intelligence that helped identify the suspect, eventually leading troops to track him down and arrest him.
