Lagos to introduce special number plates for PWDs |LAGOS EYE NEWS

The Lagos State Government has commenced plans to introduce dedicated vehicle number plates for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) as part of efforts to enhance accessibility, mobility, and inclusion across the state.

The initiative was discussed on Wednesday during a meeting between the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA) and the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), where both agencies agreed to collaborate on the development and implementation of the scheme.

Speaking at the meeting, the Permanent Secretary of the MVAA, Abdulrasheed Muri-Okunola, said the proposed number plates would make it easier to identify vehicles transporting persons with disabilities and improve their movement across the state.

According to him, the agency has already initiated discussions with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and will begin the necessary administrative processes with LASODA to facilitate the rollout of the project.

The General Manager of LASODA, Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, explained that the proposed system would cater to all categories of persons with disabilities, including parents of children with disabilities and caregivers.

She noted that the initiative would strengthen recognition of persons with disabilities and improve their access to support services, while reinforcing the state’s commitment to equal opportunities and an inclusive society where everyone can participate fully in social and economic activities.

The proposed scheme builds on the Lagos State Government’s 2025 announcement of plans to introduce disability-specific vehicle number plates as part of broader measures aimed at promoting accessibility and social inclusion.

The initiative also aligns with the Lagos State Special People’s Law of 2011, which established LASODA to safeguard the rights of persons with disabilities, prevent discrimination, and promote equal opportunities across all sectors.

Both LASODA and the MVAA reaffirmed their commitment to finalising the operational framework for the scheme, with senior officials from both agencies participating in the discussions.
