US President Donald Trump has renewed efforts to restrict birthright citizenship, signing new executive orders targeting specific categories of children born in the United States.
The latest measures reportedly seek to deny or limit citizenship in cases involving children of individuals linked to foreign embassies or organisations, people classified as “alien enemies,” and situations involving alleged citizenship fraud.
A separate executive order is aimed at curbing so-called “birth tourism,” with tighter visa restrictions for foreign nationals travelling to the United States primarily to give birth.
Trump had previously attempted to restrict automatic citizenship for children born in the US to undocumented immigrants and people in the country temporarily. However, the US Supreme Court struck down that effort in June.
The new orders are expected to face legal challenges as Trump continues his push to reshape US immigration and citizenship policy.
