Sanwo-Olu Visits Flood-Hit Communities, Warns Against Illegal Waste Disposal |LAGOS EYE NEWS

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has visited communities affected by the persistent rainfall across the state to assess the impact of the flooding and interact with residents whose homes, businesses and daily activities have been disrupted.

The governor said the heavy rainfall has placed significant pressure on Lagos’ drainage infrastructure, noting that the state’s coastal location, combined with high tides and rising lagoon water levels, often slows the drainage of floodwater.

During the inspection, Sanwo-Olu expressed concern over the blockage of major drainage channels by plastic waste, household refuse and banned Styrofoam products, describing the situation as unacceptable.

He warned that anyone caught disposing of refuse indiscriminately would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The governor also directed relevant government agencies to intensify drainage clearing operations and provide necessary support to affected communities, adding that vulnerable areas across the state would continue to be closely monitored for prompt intervention.

Sanwo-Olu called on residents to support government efforts by keeping drainage channels free of waste and adhering to safety advisories during the rainy season.

He assured Lagosians that the state government remains committed to reducing flooding and is working round the clock to address the challenges, while urging residents to stay safe and avoid flooded roads whenever possible.
