Tension erupted in Ikire, Osun State, on Monday morning as suspected political thugs reportedly attacked security operatives and commuters in an attempt to forcefully take control of the local government council.
The violence occurred around Naira and Kobo Junction, where the suspected attackers were said to have moved towards the local government premises.
Several people, including travellers, a driver and a commuter, were reportedly killed during the violence, while police officers deployed to maintain law and order also came under attack.
Those identified in connection with the incident include T. Banson, Soskid and Ayewo, who was described as a wanted Accord Party-linked thug.
According to reports, Soskid allegedly seized a firearm from a police officer during the confrontation, further escalating the situation and increasing the threat to security personnel and civilians.
The attackers reportedly confronted the police as officers attempted to prevent them from gaining access to the local government premises.
The violence sparked panic in parts of Ikire, particularly around Naira and Kobo Junction, forcing residents, motorists and other road users to seek safety.
Security operatives were subsequently deployed to restore order and prevent the situation from escalating further.
The incident has renewed concerns over political violence in Ikire and the alleged use of force in attempts to gain control of local government administration.
