The Federal Government has said Nigeria’s maritime sector has undergone significant transformation since the establishment of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy in August 2023 by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, disclosed this while presenting the ministry’s three-year scorecard, highlighting achievements in revenue generation, port infrastructure, maritime security, regulation, indigenous shipping, human-capital development, fisheries and inland-waterway safety.
According to Oyetola, agencies under the ministry generated ₦1.83 trillion in revenue in 2025, representing a 160 per cent increase from the ₦700.79 billion recorded in 2023.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser, Bolaji Akinola, the minister said the reforms had delivered measurable improvements across various areas of the maritime sector.
He said the new Nigeria Ports Economic Regulatory Authority (NPERA) framework would strengthen economic regulation in the port sector.
Oyetola also disclosed that interventions by the ministry and its agencies had saved port users more than ₦86 billion in unjustified demurrage.
The minister further noted that Nigeria regained its seat on the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Category C Council in November 2025, after a 14-year absence.
He added that, through the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Nigeria secured the lifting of the 12-year United States Coast Guard Condition of Entry restrictions affecting vessels arriving from Nigerian ports.
According to him, the developments demonstrate that Nigeria is not only reforming its maritime sector domestically but is also restoring its voice and influence in the international maritime community.
On inland waterways, Oyetola said safety interventions included the distribution of thousands of life jackets, while plans were underway to replace unsafe wooden boats with modern fibreglass vessels.
He added that the fisheries sector also recorded growth, with fish production reaching 1.4 million metric tonnes in 2025.
The minister said the achievements reflected the Federal Government’s commitment to positioning the marine and blue economy as a major driver of economic growth, job creation and sustainable development.
