An associate editor with Kenya’s The Standard newspaper, Alex Kiprotich, has been abducted by armed men and later found dumped near a dam more than 200 kilometres from where he was taken.
Kiprotich was reportedly abducted at about 9:20 p.m. on Tuesday along the Gilgil-Nakuru highway near Nakuru.
According to the Standard Group, the journalist was travelling in a vehicle when an unmarked white car stopped in front of it at a temporary road bottleneck.
Dashcam footage released by the newspaper appeared to show four men in civilian clothing, with their faces obscured, emerging from the vehicle. Some appeared to be carrying firearms while others held what looked like baseball bats.
The men reportedly converged on Kiprotich’s vehicle, removed him and drove away.
The Standard Group said Kiprotich was found at about 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday near Masinga Dam, roughly 200 kilometres southeast of the abduction scene.
The media group said he had been dumped by his captors in the early hours of the morning.
“Mr Kiprotich was located by a Standard Group team led by the Group CEO Chaacha Mwita,” the company said in a statement.
He was reportedly safe but “understandably shaken” by the ordeal.
The Standard, one of Kenya’s largest news outlets, has maintained critical coverage of President William Ruto’s administration. The newspaper said the circumstances surrounding Kiprotich’s abduction remained “deeply troubling” and called for full accountability.
Kenyan police and government authorities had not immediately issued comments on the incident.
The reported abduction comes amid growing concerns over the safety of government critics, activists and journalists in Kenya. Human rights organisations have accused state agencies of involvement in a series of abductions, particularly following widespread anti-government protests in 2024.
Kiprotich had also reportedly disclosed in June that he narrowly escaped an earlier alleged attempt to kidnap him. The incident occurred three days after President Ruto publicly criticised the Standard Group on social media.
