Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said work on the Ojota-Opebi Link Bridge will be completed within the next two weeks.
Sanwo-Olu disclosed this on Thursday, September 10, 2026, during a dinner with selected journalists in Lagos.
The governor explained that the opening of the bridge had been delayed to allow contractors to complete additional architectural features on the project.
He said the state government decided against opening the bridge before the outstanding work was completed to avoid shutting it down again shortly after commissioning.
According to him, the remaining work requires the use of large cranes, making it impractical to open the bridge before the installation is completed.
“We didn’t want to open it and now need to shut it down again before they arrive,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The governor said the contractors had assured the government that the outstanding work would be completed within two weeks.
Sanwo-Olu explained that the additional features were intended to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the bridge, noting that modern bridge construction increasingly incorporates architectural elements.
He disclosed that an “iconic cane” structure would be installed over the bridge to create a distinctive skyline for Lagos.
“We’re doing that iconic cane over it, which will give it a unique skyline of Lagos,” he said.
The governor added that the completed bridge would provide residents with another space to experience Lagos, including opportunities for recreation and content creation.
He said the government preferred to complete all planned features before opening the facility rather than rush the project.
“We want to finish this thing well,” Sanwo-Olu said.
