A 53-year-old woman, Nelly Monday, has been sentenced to one month in prison for dumping refuse into a drainage channel during rainfall in Meiran, Lagos.

Monday was arrested on Wednesday, after she was allegedly caught disposing of waste in a drainage channel.

She was subsequently arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty to the environmental offence.

The court convicted and sentenced her to one month in prison.

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has warned residents against indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly the dumping of refuse in drainage channels and other unauthorised locations. Adding that such acts constitute environmental offences and attract sanctions under the law.

LAWMA added that it would continue to work with relevant enforcement agencies to identify and sanction environmental offenders across Lagos State.

It urged residents to dispose of their waste responsibly through approved waste disposal channels to help keep the environment clean and prevent the blockage of drainage systems.
