Two political allies of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, have defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM) amid controversy surrounding the party’s House of Assembly tickets for Agege Constituencies I and II.
The affected politicians are the former Chairman of Agege Local Government, Ganiyu Kola Egunjobi, and Azeez Oladapo Yusuf Ninalowo.
The duo reportedly emerged winners of the APC primary elections conducted in May 2026.
According to results from the initial primaries, Egunjobi polled 9,132 votes to win the Agege Constituency I ticket, while Ninalowo secured 8,299 votes in Agege Constituency II.
Both politicians were reportedly backed by Obasa during the primary process.
However, the APC subsequently released a list containing different names as its candidates for the two constituencies.
Oluwagbenga Michael Abiola was listed as the candidate for Agege Constituency I, while Sule Shakiru Akindele was named for Constituency II.
The development triggered protests and petitions from some party members who disputed the revised results.
Egunjobi reportedly challenged the change, insisting that results from the various voting centres showed that he won the primary election.
Some Agege APC leaders also petitioned the party’s national leadership, alleging that Egunjobi’s 9,132 votes were not reflected in the subsequently released list.
The defections have further heightened tensions within the Agege chapter of the APC as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections.
LAGOS EYE NEWS reports that Obasa secured the APC ticket to contest the Agege Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives after efforts to secure the party’s Lagos West Senatorial ticket were reportedly unsuccessful.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official statement from the office of the Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, on the reported defections.
The Lagos State chapter of the APC had also not issued an official statement on the development.
