The Federal Government has directed Energy China to explore the most practical approach to delivering the long-delayed Mambila Hydropower Project, including the possibility of implementing it in phases.
Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, disclosed this following Nigeria’s victory in the arbitration proceedings over the Mambila Hydropower Project.
Tegbe said the government considers large-scale hydropower projects such as Mambila, alongside smaller hydropower schemes serving agricultural corridors, as key components of Nigeria’s medium- and long-term electricity strategy.
The minister also disclosed that Nigeria’s recent power mission to China secured commitments from major Chinese companies and financiers to accelerate priority electricity projects across the country.
According to him, Sinomach, CMEC, CNEEC and Chinese financial institutions have committed to supporting the Federal Government’s power development agenda.
CMEC, he said, reaffirmed its role in the 1.9-gigawatt Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), with the first transmission lines expected to be delivered in the first quarter of 2027.
Tegbe added that CNEEC had advanced financing arrangements for the $116 million Zungeru power evacuation project, while TBEA committed to a proposed $500 million industrial park for power-equipment manufacturing in Nigeria.
The minister said work on the PPI and the proposed East-West Super Grid was also being accelerated, with the latter targeted for delivery within three years.
Similarly, HengFei Cables committed to supplying cables for the second phase of the PPI and proposed establishing a cable assembly plant and training centre in Nigeria.
Tegbe said the initiatives were designed to go beyond infrastructure development by promoting local manufacturing, skills development and technical capacity.
He said the combination of new power infrastructure, local production and workforce development would strengthen Nigeria’s electricity sector and contribute to improved power supply nationwide.
